Micro Energy Systems

R.Beith; I P Burdon; M. Knowles - Personal Name;

The energy industry of the 21st century is undergoing a period of massive change: means of power generation, distribution, and use are already very different from what they were 50, or even 30 years ago, and they will have to change radically over the next few years in order to meet the requirements of sustainability and renewability arising from global warming and climate change. rnIn the second half of the 20th century we all thought in terms of generating electricity in vast quantities, in massive centralized power stations, located remotely from the consumersof the power. In today’s economic and environmental climate we can no longer assume that this is how energy will be supplied in the future. The logical and practical way forward has to be generated and use heat and power locally in embedded or distributed geneartion schemes.rnMicro energy systems is a very welcome and overdue addition to the technical press in the field of small-scale power generation. We have been fixated for may years on how large-scale power generation can become more efficient and environmentally friendly, and many improvements have indeed been made. However, now is the time for the paradigm shift in our thinking towards localized, small-scale generation of electrical power and, in some cases, hear energy.rnAs these chapters point out, there are many sources of small-scale power available to us today, many of them genuinely renewable and all of them sustainable solar (PV), wind, hydro, biomass, and biogas are all considered here. Furthermore, modern energy, conversion systems such as micro-CHP (both with reciprocating engines and turbines) and fuel cells are also given good coverage.rnMicro energy systems is likely to become a standard textbook in the field of small-scale generation and should prove invaluable, both to those of us who actually work in the micro energy field and as an educational tool to improve the knowledge of an increasingly interested and aware public. It is also hoped that it will go some way to convincing government and local authorities of the need to see small-scale, distributed generation as a significant part of the solution to the energy and sustainability problems facing us all in the not-so-distant future.rnFossil fuel resources are forecast to decline worldwide over the next century and there are international concerns over athmospheric emissions. Consequently, the energy supply industry is set to be radically re-shaped over the next few decades. Total reliance on centralized electricity stations is being questioned, and there is a growing interest to produce more electricity closer to the point of use with micro energy systems. These can service local industrial, commercial, and domestic, requirements.rnMany micro systems can be driven by renewable energy contributing positively to the CO2-reduction programme aimed at producing 15 per cent electricity from renewables by 2015. Even where gas is used in micro systems, higher overall efficiencies can be obtained by heat and power application and avoidance of line losses, thus supporting the government’s energy saving targets.rnMicro energy systems – review of technology, issues of scale and integration includes international contributions from countries as far apart as new Zealand, USA, and Italy. Using engines, turbines, and fuel cells in the range 1 kW to 2 MW, such diverse resources as wind, solar, hydro, and biomass are covered. The volume discuss the issues and topics associated with:rn- renewable micro energy technologies and projects;rn- fuel cell applications including hybrid;rn- domestic and commercial micro heat and power;rn- the provision of integrated energy services;rn- interface issues with local electrical networks and controls;rn- issues of scale;rn- costs and benefits,rnMicro energy systems is essential reading for power and energy service companies, project developers, policy markers, and all those concerned with power generation technologies and renewable energy.rnBob Beith is a consultant supporting small companies exploiting new energy technology. He is an active member of the Imeche’s energy, environment, and sustainability group.rnIan Burdon is a vice-president and head of sustainable energy developments at engineering consultants PB power. He is an active member of the North East England Renewable Energy Group (NEREG).rnMike Knowles CEng, MIMeche is an experienced consultant on energy and waste matters within the power supply industry. He is an active member of the Imeche, and has helped to organize many of their events. rn
